First Winter Male King Eider in Toronto

This male King Eider in first winter plumage is on the Toronto waterfront at Humber Bay, where the Humber River discharges into Lake Ontario. Its favourite spot is near the pedestrian bridge and it dives regularly, presumably for mollusks, possibly zebra mussels, which are common in Lake Ontario. 9 December 2014.

 

It has fresh black scapulars, which in several years will be the sails on the adult male. Toronto on 9 December 2014.
