Juvenile Loggerhead Shrikes on the Carden Alvar

VIDEO: Three juvenile Loggerhead Shrikes were being fed by adults. The young waited in a hawthorn bush, which is their preferred nest site on the Carden Alvar. These young shrikes have their full tails. 26 June 2018.

Carden Alvar is one of the last remaining strongholds of the endangered Loggerhead Shrike in Ontario. Only 5 pairs were reported here in late May 2018.

Two juveniles sat more in the open while one hid itself deeper in the hawthorn bush. One swooped down into the grass to catch food for itself.

We hope they are successful, migrate safely to their wintering grounds, and return next spring. Carden Alvar on 26 June 2018
