Slaty-backed and Other Gulls at Brantford Landfill

Adult Slaty-backed Gull in winter plumage at Mohawk Street Landfill in Brandford, Ontario. James Lees found this individual with a red spot on its bill. Very wide tertial crescent, mantle shade slightly lighter than Great Black-backed Gull, bright pink legs, winter head streaking that coalesces around the eye. 13 December 2018. We are very grateful to the staff at the landfill for allowing access to see the gulls. They set up a special area for us.

Flight shot showing the "string of pearls". This individual has a smaller mirror on P10 and wider space between it and white wingtip. Others people's photos show well the difference between tP10 on this bird and P10 on the other Slaty-backed at Brantford and the recent Slaty-backed in North Bay, Ontario. This is a different Slaty-backed Gull, the first one found by Richard Poort on 11 December 2018. This individual has a touch of black on the bill at the gonys.  Brantford landfill on 13 December 2018.
