Red-bellied Woodpecker Tail Pattern

Red-bellied woodpecker at a feeder at Presqu'ile Provincial Park on 16 November 2019. I had not previously noticed the upper tail pattern on Red-bellied Woodpecker until watching this individual at a bird feeder.

Red-bellied Woodpecker is aptly named when one can see the red on its belly. The tail pattern is so geometric that at first I thought it was letters or symbols on a label - maybe a new way of marking birds to identify them for a research project! But this fascinating tail pattern is natural. Presqu'ile Provincial Park in Ontario on 16 November 2019.
