Kumlien's Gull with Iced Legs

 

It seems odd that a northern gull like this adult Kumlien's Gull from the Canadian Arctic has ice forming on its legs. It hasn't been extremely cold. Except for some loose ice in this small harbour, Lake Ontario is wide open. Bluffers Park on Lake Ontario in Toronto, Ontario on 13 January 2015. Jim Coey pointed out that since gulls have a special circulatory system in their legs that prevents legs from icing up, this gull may not be in good condition.
