Snowy Plover sheltering in depression from brisk wind

Barrier beach, Marco Island, 19 January 2009

Ron Pittaway and I were keen to see wintering shorebirds because in Ontario we do not see them in full basic (winter) plumage. We saw 23 species of shorebirds. The following is a selection.

Black-bellied Plover at Tigertail Beach on 19 January 2009 with alternate plumage. Was it retained alternate plumage or is it molting early into alternate plumage?
