Purple Martin Colony Near Lake Simcoe, Ontario

With the substantial decline of Purple Martins in recent years, every colony is noteworthy. It was was a treat to see these Purple Martins near Sutton and Sibbald Provincial Park on 23 July 2015. It isn't on the shoreline of Lake Simcoe, but there is a small wetland with cattails on the property. Ron Pittaway has known about this colony for several years.

 

The colony was still very active with male and female adults bringing food to young in the house and gourds One young stuck its head out.

Purple Martin house is on large open lawn with small wetland nearby. About 12 pairs raised an unknown number of young in 2015.
