Yellow Warbler at Bluffers Park in Toronto

Ron Pittaway spotted this Yellow Warbler at Bluffers Park in Toronto on 24 December 2015. It was in rose bushes with lots of rose hips. Yellow Warbler is not expected in winter in Ontario. James (1991) in the Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Ontario lists an early January record reported by Goodwin (1989) in American Birds 34:267-270. Coady and Smith (2000) report that this record was accepted by the Toronto Bird Records Committee. It's a new addition to the Ontario Winter Checklist maintained by Josh Vandermeulen:

Stephen O'Donnell and I took photos showing diagnostic yellow patches in the tail feathers.

This photo show the tertials neatly edged in yellow.

Frequently it went into one of the spruces nearby.
