2013 Toronto Whimbrel Watch - 27 May 2013

Alex Lamoreaux in Virginia USA reported that 2430 Whimbrel departed the coast there between 6:00 and 8:10 p.m. on Sunday evening, 26 May. We expected Whimbrel to arrive in Toronto on Monday morning, 27 May. Between 6:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m on 27 May, I saw 461 Whimbrels at Colonel Sam Smith Park in Toronto, with most passing us between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m.

Flock sizes were 250, 78, 5, 105, 13, 1, and 9. Total 461.

One flock of 13 + 1 circled close to us for several hours as if looking for a place to land before continuing their northbound migration.

Colonel Sam Smith Park in Toronto is where Kipling Avenue ends at Lake Ontario south of Lake Shore Blvd West. Park in south lot and walk out to point.
