First winter Purple Sandpiper, Dunlin and more at Presqu'ile, Ontario

James Bay Shorebird Project Reunion - Purplepalooza hosted by Doug McRae

Purple Sandpiper in first winter plumage on Gull Island at Presqu'ile Provincial Park on 6 December 2015. Aged by contrasting white fringes on wing coverts and tertials. Note that Purple Sandpipers in juvenile plumage are not seen in southern Ontario because they molt in the north before migration. A purple sheen is visible is some lights and angles giving this sandpiper its name.

Dunlin in first winter plumage at Presqu'ile Provincial Park on 6 December 2015. Aged by contrasting white fringes on the wing coverts and tertials.
