Tahiti Chestnut trees at the Marae Tetiiroa archaeological site have a buttressed trunk and fruit with a seed inside that is eaten by some birds and was traditional food for people.

Breadfruit is an important staple of the Marquesas. When a child is born a breadfruit tree is planted to be sure they never are without food.
